Tanushree Dutta was born and raised in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand state (then Bihar), and did her graduation in communications in Pune, Maharashtra.

Tanushree Dutta was placed among the top ten in the Miss Universe contest of 2004.

Tanushree Dutta debuted in Bollywood in 2005. Tanushree Dutta worked on two films together Chocolate and Aashiq Banaya Apne. Chocolate was intended to be Tanushree Dutta’s debut film, however its release was preceded by Aashiq Banaya Apne, which led to differences with the Chocolate director Vivek Agnihotri.

Tanushree Dutta, a dusky B Com second year student from Pune University, bagged the coveted crown amidst stiff competition from 29 contestants who were chosen from about 6,000 girls from all over the country.

Tanushree Dutta’s reply to actor Sanjay Dutt’s question in the final round, whether there was a healthy competition when only one wins, won her the crown.

The audience broke into applause when Tanushree Dutta replied, “When there is unhealthy competition everybody is a loser.”

Vidya Balan, the Tamilian Iyer girl from Palghat (Kerala), grew up in Mumbai.Vidya Balan did her early years of education at St. Antony’s School and later graduated in Sociology from St. Xavier’s College. While Vidya Balan was doing her MA from Mumbai University, she got an offer in a Malayalam film titled ‘Chakram’ with Mohanlal. Unfortunately, the film was shelved mid-way because of some issues between the director and actor. Then Vidya Balan had to wait for a few more years to make her movie debut.

In 1998, Vidya Balan started her career as a model in Surf Excel advertisement. Later Vidya Balan appeared in more than 25 ad films like Ponds, Bajaj etc. Before getting her big break in Bollywood, Vidya Balan acted in a few music videos with Euphoria, Shubha Mudgal, Pankaj Udhas etc. Vidya Balan was also seen in TV serials such as Ashok Pandit’s ‘Hanste Khelte’ and Ektaa Kapoor’s ‘Hum Paanch’ as well as a Bengali movie ‘Bhalo Theko’ with actor Joy Sengupta. Vidya Balan won the best actress award, ‘Anand Lok Puraskar’ for the movie in Kolkata.

In 2005, Vidya Balan debuted in Bollywood with Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Parineetha directed by Pradeep Sarkar. It was nothing short of a challenge for her to capture the grace, elegance and subtle nuances of her character Lolita. Vidya Balan succeeded in making the role perfect with her natural beauty and talent. But it was not an easy feat for Vidya Balan to get her Bollywood break. Vidya Balan had to go through 40 screen tests and 17 make-up shoots before Vidya Balan was chosen for the lead role in this film. After that, Vidya Balan read Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s book on which the movie was based and saw the 1953 celluloid version of ‘Parineeta’ by filmmaker Bimal Roy.Vidya Balan has a number of future projects lined up for release.

Vidya Balan has a very traditional Indian look in contrast to most of today’s Bollywood starlets. Vidya Balan is associated with AmFar (Americans for AIDS Research) and Hale House, a home for children born with HIV and those affected by drug addiction. Vidya Balan also involves herself with the Harvard AIDS Institute, by hosting forums and participating in events throughout the year. No wonder that Vidya Balan is one of the most talked about names in Bollywood today.
